Alexander H. Spaulding , “ Sandy ”
Mr. Spaulding is the President and Managing General Partner of Sea Glass Capital, a financial advisory firm he founded. He spent the prior 8 years working with Bill Bain and Ralph Willard developing The Hinckley Company into one of America ’s great brands. Hinckley is America ’s premier builder of semi custom sail and power yachts. Hinckley is also one of the largest service and refit companies for yachts in the United States . Together, they grew Hinckley from under $25 million and 175 employees to over $100 million and 700 employees in three years and achieved an extraordinary return for the shareholders’ original investment. Hinckley was already a famous yacht company when they purchased the Company in 1997, having launched some famous sail boat lines such as the Pilot 35, the Bermuda 40 and the Sou’Wester series of beautiful sailboats from 42 feet to 70 feet. However, using their professional management skills, Sandy, Ralph and Bill grew the brand by over 400% in three years.
In capacities including President of Hinckley Yachts and EVP and CFO of The Hinckley Company, Sandy was responsible for sales, marketing, and product development, including overseeing the sales team in five regional offices around the U.S., marketing initiatives such as boat shows and owner oriented events, product development initiatives including the launch of four new boat models in 2003 and 2004, including Hinckley’s new beautiful 42 foot Day Sailer. He was also responsible for boat building operations of 300 employees including the consolidation of three boat building locations into one new production site. Sandy was a featured panelist at American Express’ Luxury Summit in 2004 on ‘Craftsmanship in the Modern World’
During his tenure at Hinckley, he was also responsible for Finance, IT, HR and Legal, including mergers and acquisitions, bank and investor relations, implementation of new CRM system, new ERP system and new HR procedures and all legal proceedings.
Immediately prior to joining Hinckley, Mr. Spaulding was a Partner with Bain, Willard Companies of Boston where he was responsible for acquisition and financing efforts for the private equity firm founded by Bill Bain and Ralph Willard, including the acquisition of The Hinckley Company.
Prior to Mr. Spaulding’s career in private equity and operations, Sandy had a distinguished career in corporate and securities law for law firms in Boston and New York City, culminating in his position as Partner and Head of the Corporate Law Group in a prestigious Boston law firm. His practice included mergers and acquisitions, leveraged buy-outs, start ups, venture capital, credit facilities, reorganizations, work-outs and lobbying efforts representing both investment banks and corporations in approximately $2 billion dollars value of transactions.
Sandy has been active in numerous non-profit institutions in the Boston area and is currently the Governor’s Appointee as a Member of the Investment Committee for the Massachusetts Capital Resource Company, a mezzanine and venture investor in Massachusetts’ companies.
Sandy graduated from Georgetown University in 1979 and Boston University School of Law in 1982.
